If grinding wheels have higher hardness, finer trimming, and lighter grinding load, it easily appears the passivation. At this time, although the machining surface quality is good, the metal removal rate has dropped significantly.

If grinding wheels have lower hardness, coarse trimming, and heavier grinding load, it will appear releasing type easily. At this time, the contour shape of grinding wheels will be distortion, which will seriously affect the grinding surface quality and machining precision.

In the process of grinding carbon steel, because the chips soften under high temperature, the impaction will be embedded in the gap of grinding wheels and form the embedded block; In the process of grinding titanium alloy, because it has strong affinity between chips and grits, which can make the chips sintered and bonded on the grinding grain, forming  the adhesive type blockage. If grinding wheels appear blockage, it will lose the cutting ability, grinding force and temperature excursion, and its surface quality will also be obviously decreased.

There are three basic forms about grinding wheel wear: abrasion wear, crushing wear and shedding wear.

A. Abrasion wear: Abrasion wear refers to the small wear edge plane formed on grinding wheel abrasive grains. In the process of grinding, the mechanical friction between artifacts hard points, high temperature oxidation and diffusion effect all make abrasive grains cutting blade cause wear passivation.

B. Crushing wear: In the grinding process of abrasive grains, they need to go through repeated heat and cold, forming great thermal stress on the surface of abrasive grain, and finally, they will appear the fragmentations along the surface.

C. Shedding wear: In the process of grinding, with grinding temperature rising, the bond strength will be reduced. When the grinding force increases more than bond strength, the whole abrasive grains will  fall off from grinding wheel. That’s shedding wear.
