Abrasive is an important constituent part of grinding wheels. During grinding process, abrasive grains are squeezed drastically, along with the effect of friction and high temperature. To adapt to different materials and workpieces, abrasive has to own high hardness, certain intensity and toughness, good thermal stability and chemical stability. Next is a short introduction of major superhard materials—synthetic diamond, CBN, natural diamond, etc. only by choosing the right materials types of grinding wheels, can  grinding wheels give the grinding force to full play.

Synthetic Diamond

synthetic diamond

General features: cubic crystal structure, more crisp than natural diamond, high hardness, high toughness, and good wear resistance. Often uses resin or ceramic as bonding agents.

SMD

Application fields: saw cutting, boring tools, dressers, diamond roller wheels, saw cutting tools, etc.

DMD

Application fields: dressers for diamond roller wheels.

D(RVD), MBD

Application fields: grinding and cutting cast iron, chilled steel, hard alloy, and other hard materials. It can be used in grinding, rough honing, etc. Its service life is longer than silicon carbide.

SCD

Application fields: metal bond abrasive products, electroplated products, boring tools and grinding.

CBN

Characteristics: CBN has the similar cubic crystal structure as diamond. Its hardness is slightly below the hardness, but it has a high intensity, good conductivity for heat, heat stability, good chemical inertness to iron, and good grinding performance. CBN is not as crisp as silicon carbide but is sharper than diamond. It also has a high working efficiency and long service life.

Application fields: grinding of combining steel, alloy steel, and hard alloy; stainless steel, high intensity steel, nickel alloy, bearing steel, etc. Polycrystalline CBN can be used to produce turning tools.

Natural Diamond

Characteristics: cubic crystal structure, highest in hardness, relative high intensity and good conductivity for heat. The particles have a smooth surface and a good toughness. Natural diamond has a poor adhesion force with bonding agents and the price is high.

Application fields: grinding high hardness materials and all kinds of difficult-to-cut materials, and can be made into all types of dressers, turning tools, diamond cutters, geological oil drilling, hard alloy, synthetic gemstones, and semiconductors.
