As the basic industry of machining and refractory materials, the abrasives industry has distinguished itself by playing a significant role in engineering ceramics and the electronics industry since the 20th century, which contributed to the development and prosperity of the abrasives industry.

innovation

The fast development and the market boom have resulted in lack of impetus for technological innovation. Abrasives companies with no technicians still survive and turn bigger. While poor production conditions remain, low price competition occurs every now and then, and the market is packed with inferior abrasives products.

The situation about which many insiders felt worried began in 2012. Only those who attach more importance to quality succeeded in maintaining the market. As an energy consuming and highly polluting industry, the abrasives industry is impacted by the macroscopic readjustment and control due to the fact that its capacity far exceeds demand. How to tackle the problem has become an urgent issue to be pondered. Following are some suggestions as to make things better.

Focus on Technological Content in Abrasives Production

1. Adjust Manufacture Techniques to Improve Added Value

Stricter control over the smelting of conventional abrasives, such as fused alumina and silicon carbide, should be made. A good master of smelting techniques is the basis for product quality guarantee.

2. Produce According to Demand

Conventional abrasives are used for refractory materials. In terms of abrasive grains sizes, a higher bulk density is required so as to improve the intensity of refractory materials. The raw materials for sintering Sic are supposed to be spherical in particle shape, and there is a high requirement for crystalline density.

Theoretically speaking, only when the spherical particles are in a proportion of 6:3:1 (coarse: medium: fine)  can the highest bulk density be reached. Currently, Barmac, ball mills, and autogenous tumbling mills are ideal choices.

Abrasives used in coated abrasives products are suggested to be sharp and there is usually an upper limit to the abrasives bulk density.

As to F sand designed for resin cutting discs, there is not very strict standard for the particle sizes. Actually, the sharpness of abrasive grains should be taken into account.

3. Improve Abrasive Grains Cleanness

The cleanness of abrasives has an effect on the bonding force of finished products. Experiments prove that abrasive grains with higher cleanness have a higher intensity when made into abrasives products or refractory brick.

4. Develop New Products

The emergence of new abrasives products, such as SG abrasives, polycrystalline abrasives, grouped abrasives, and different shapes of abrasive grains is facilitating the abrasives industry to expand to new technological field and market.

Environmental Protection & Integrated Utilization

recycle

In the past decade, most of the abrasives companies invested in environmental protection simply to the national policy. There were little concrete parameters for environmental protection. As a result, abrasives companies suffered huge loss. According to incomplete statistics, 90% of the dust-cleaning apparatus built in the past decade need a second investment. Therefore, abrasives companies should check concrete parameters, such as filter area, the quality and precision of filter medium, system resistance, operation costs, etc.

Measures have been taken by a great many abrasives companies in terms of integrated utilization, such as recycle of heat in fused alumina smelting and reuse of CO in Sic smelting. After all, the importance and necessity energy saving and environmental protection in the abrasives industry are on the agenda.

Though the development track of the abrasives industry is flux and reflux, the overall tendency is rising. Its significance to the national economy is as plain as daylight. While great efforts still need to be made in technological progress and environment treatment.
