Abrasive grain is the basic material of abrasives industry, which is an ever-lasting industry. With the rapid development of science and technology, product specializing and difference are the two major trends in abrasives industry. The article discusses different abrasive grains applied in coated abrasives and bonded abrasives.

Abrasive grain properties depend on its hardness, toughness and the particle shape in abrasive equipment manufacturing . The major category of abrasive grains include:brown fused alumina, white fused alumina, micro crystalline fused alumina, mono crystalline fused alumina, fused zironica alumina, CBN and diamond. Abrasive grains are chosen based on different grinding media to achieve the best grinding effect.

1. Coated Abrasives

Coated abrasives including three major elements: substrate, abrasive grains and bonding agent. Coated abrasives are made by attaching abrasive grains to bending substrate even with bonding agent. The manufacturing process is generally composed of substrate material processing,drying and curing.

2. Bonded Abrasives

Bonded abrasives are composed of abrasive grains, bonding agent and air hole. The manufacturing procedure is to combine abrasive grains with bonding agent. Bonding agent contains two categories: organic bonding agent and inorganic bonding agent.

The major factors that may influence coated abrasives quality are: particle size, abrasive grain size, abrasives hardness, particle size and bonding agent. Following are a few introduction about abrasives hardness. 

Abrasives hardness means that under the function of gravity, the degree of abrasive grains drop from abrasives surface. It is an important element that may affect bonded abrasives properties and reflect how hard boning agent can hold abrasive grains. For bonded abrasives, the better hardness, density, cutting property of bonded abrasives it produces.

3. Materials Choice

There are some principles to follow when choosing materials:
Fixed furnace smelting brown fused alumina blocks α -Al2O3 crystalline is large enough to be applied in coated abrasives. Dumping furnace smelting brown fused alumina blocks α -Al2O3 crystalline is small for bonded abrasives.
