Abrasive Belts and polishing belts have a wide range of application in many mechanical manufacturing industries. The article introduces the characteristics of VSM abrasive belt grinding.

Like most polishing belts, VSM abrasive belts have a wide range of application in many mechanical manufacturing industries. Abrasive belt grinding is similar to conventional cutting process, which uses abrasive grains to cut and grind wood. The formation of abrasive dust will also release heat.

The characteristics of VSM abrasive belt grinding include:

1. Large amount of energy during grinding process. Because of the small chip thickness and high cutting speed, the processed surface and chip deformation are serious. This characteristic is shown in power. Namely, although wood grinding amount in each minute is not large, each time the cut wood volume is small, so the total energy consumption is much higher.

2. Each cutting blade of the abrasive grains amount to a cutting tool, since most abrasive grains cut with its negative rake and cutting tools have a circular arc radius, the cutting tool will scrap the processed surface and make it deformed severely, which is especially true when cutting blade turns rust. 

3. The cutting blades of abrasive grains are disorderly arranged on the abrasive products. Although the average distance among abrasive grains can be calculated by grit sizes, the cutting blade of each abrasive grain does not fall on the same height or circle, thus the cutting situation of each abrasive grain vary. Cutting thickness of some abrasive grains is too thin that they can only rub on the surface of workpieces, so the chip shape is irregular.

4. While grinding, because abrasive grains cutting blade is rust, the grinding speed is fast, and the deformation is severe, so grinding zone's temperature is very high. While wood has a poor thermal conductivity, so the processed surface is likely to be burnt and the abrasives products will turn rust soon.

5. VSM reduces grinding heat by reasonably choice of abrasives products. The organization cannot be too tight in case of abrasives products blocking. In addition, the grinding depth should be well controlled. To accelerate heat dissipation, compressed air should be adopted in wide belt sanders. When sand drums rotate at a high speed, circulating air should be employed to cool down.
