Market Analysis and Quotes of Aluminum Oxide in October

In October, the domestic aluminum oxide (alumina) price was still soaring. In the domestic market, the market quotes of industrial alumina were around 2500-2600 Yuan/ton, increasing by 400-500 Yuan/ton compared with the same period in September.

It is learned that industrial alumina prices continued to rise in October because of the tight supply. Especially the reduced imported alumina caused huge shock for domestic aluminum suppliers. According to customs statistics, China imported 129000 tons of alumina in August, up 68.3% on year-on-year basis. The import amount was $41.598 million, down 71.0% on year-on-year basis, and the import price was $323 / ton. And there were 96000 tons of alumina imported from Australia, down 61.1% on year-on-year basis; 28000 tons of alumina imported from Indonesia, up 7296.1% from a year earlier.

It is understood that since the free trade agreement about China and Australia was signed successfully on June 17, 2015, the tariffs of alumina was reduced from 8% to 0. The quantity of alumina imported from Australia has been smoothly every month, and foreign suppliers have always focused on the production and sales situation of domestic industrial alumina, which makes imported alumina and domestic alumina no big gap in prices. But domestic spot alumina was in short supply in September, the prices rose. And then some foreign traders were also reluctant to sell imported alumina, which makes it hard to ensure the supply of raw materials for domestic enterprises, and industrial alumina prices were improved.

Experts thinks that it is unlikely to continue to rise for industrial alumina, but still depends on market demand. After the event, the refractory material enterprises should be watchful, and don't overly depend on any supplier. But from the point of the surge in imported alumina from Indonesia, perhaps China's enterprises have found more appropriate sources.
