Cutting compound consists of an abrasive suspended in a paste. It is usually used in metal processing and mechanical treatment as coolant and lubricant. It is important to choose right cutting compound based on different material of cutting tools, the material quality of workpiece, the difficulty of processing techniques, etc.

1. Steel cutting tools

The heat-resistance temperature of steel cutting tools is around 200℃ to 300 ℃. So steel cutting tools can only be used in conventional materials because they will lose hardness under high temperature. Due to the poor heat-resistance temperature of steel cutting tools, the coolant should have a good effect. Usually emulsion is adopted.

2. High-speed steel tool bits

High-speed steel tool bits are superior alloy steel containing chromium, nickel, tungsten, molybdenum, vanadium, and aluminum. The heat-resistance temperature of High-speed steel tool bits can reach as high as 600 ℃, which is higher than tool steel. Compared with other metal and ceramic materials, high-speed steel has a series of advantages. It can manage cutting in intricately shaped workpiece. What’s more, high-speed steel has a reasonable price and a good machinability.

3. Hard alloy steel cutters

Hard alloy for cutters is composed of tungsten carbide, titanium carbide, tantalum carbide, and 10% of cobalt. Its hardness is much higher than high-speed steel and the highest temperature it can withstand is 1000℃. Hard alloy steel cutters have a good wear resistance.

4. Ceramic cutting tools

Ceramic cutting tools are sintered under high temperature with aluminum oxide, metal, and carbide. The high-temperature resistance of ceramic cutting tools is better than hard alloy. Usually use in dry cutting, and sometimes use water-based cutting fluids when considering even cooling and avoiding high temperature.

5. Diamond cutting tools

Diamond cutting tools have extreme high hardness. It also use water-based cutting fluids to avoid high temperature.
