At the end of 1980s, researchers start to explore and research brazing diamond tools. At present, some diamond tool manufacturers in Europe, Japan and China (including Taiwan) have been in mass production of brazing diamond tools, which belong to the emerging diamond tools.

Electroplated diamond tools and brazing diamond tools both have the characteristics of monolayer diamond; Electroplated diamond tools are prepared by electrodeposition of metals to solidify loose diamond particle in the electrodeposited coating, and make the diamond particle with cutting ability. The coating metal on electroplated tools can not play the "binder" role strictly in abrasives industry. There is no strong chemical metallurgical bond between coating metal and abrasive grains and abrasive substrate on the interface, as a result, the coating thickness must reach the two-thirds of abrasive grain diameter, which is necessary to ensure that the substrate has the strong force for diamond, and great surface quality of the processed workpieces.

But in machining process, the cutting edge will gradually become dull, and the machining efficiency and service life of tools will not ideal. Brazing diamond tools plate some active elements on the surface coating, or brazing alloy contains a certain amount of active elements (e.g., Ti, Cr, W, etc.), and react with diamond to form carbide on the surface. Through this layer of carbide, diamond, binder and substrate can achieve solid chemical metallurgical bond by brazing, so as to realize real diamond surface metallization.

Compared with electroplated diamond tools, brazing diamond tools have strong holding force to diamond, large chip space, small power consumption, small cutting force, high machining efficiency, long service life, high utilization of diamond, and can achieve the optimal configuration and other advantages of diamond abrasives. More importantly, the pollution-free production process adapts to the concept of green production today.
