Increase in Worldwide Abrasives Demand

Up till 2017, worldwide abrasives demand is forecasted to increase by 6 percent per annum. The sales of abrasives is expected to do much better in Western Europe, North America, Eastern Europe, central and South America, and the African continent. After a rapid growth in demand in the Asia/Pacific region, abrasive gains are expected to decelerate until 2017. This deceleration will be offset by the increase in demand in other regions outside Asia. The fastest gains are expected in paper and coated abrasive, followed by metallic and super abrasives.

More Than Half the Demand is Attributed To China

China is the world's leading consumer as well as producer of abrasives and is forecasted to remain so until 2017. The sale of abrasives in China is forecasted to increase by 10 percent per annum. Currently, all addition demands of abrasives account for 55 percent of Chinese demand. The Chinese demand for abrasives is influenced by increase in manufacturing activity, additional foreign investments, and rising living standards. Other than China, abrasives demand is also attributed to the manufacturing sector in US. These sectors include aerospace, housing, furniture; steel and automotive industries, which have all experienced increased production. 

Coated, Metallic, and Super Abrasives to Remain Popular 

The leading products that are high in demand and will remain so until 2017 seem to be coated abrasives. The consumption of paper and other coated abrasives will remain popular owing to the growth in manufacturing and construction. The second fastest growing product will be metallic abrasives due to the growth in industries of its use such as metal working plants, machine tool factories, and foundries.
