Mechanical polishing is the use of the combined technique of polishing wheels and polishing paste to cut and grind on the workpiece, which in turn decreases the roughness of the workpiece's surface to achieve the polishing effect. Polishing paste is composed of polishing materials and grease. Based on different polishing materials, polishing paste can be categorized into yellow polishing paste, white polishing paste, green polishing paste, grey polishing paste, black polishing paste, or red polishing paste. The most commonly used are yellow polishing paste and green polishing paste.

The main components of yellow polishing paste are feldspar powder and grease. This kind of polishing material is most often used in the first process of polishing, which is rough polishing. Yellow polishing paste is widely used in copper, iron, steel and other metals processing, such as stainless steel and copper aluminum metal rough polishing and non-metallic products like organic glass polishing. Green polishing paste and white polishing paste are often used together with cloth wheels, which makes the mirror effect and highlight effect obvious. Green polishing paste and white polishing paste are often used in the precision polishing of chromium and nickel coatings as well as other hard metal parts.
