Diamonds come into being mainly through two ways, one is by nature, the other is by synthesis. In natural diamond, the most common crystal form is of octahedral, while a dodecahedron diamond is very rare, cube more rare. In addition, there are convex octahedron, convex dodecahedron, convex hexahedron and their combination, etc.

Due to crustal movement and natural impact, curved crystal is more than the  plane one. In terms of crystal shape, edge and vertex angle of synthetic diamond are more clear than that of natural one.

In current synthetic conditions, the most common synthetic diamond are of hexahedral and octahedral. Observing from optical or electron microscope, you can see various colorful decorative figures on the surface of the crystals, such as honeycomb figure on the surface of diamond 110, and snowflake, dendritic, triangular like figures on diamond 111.

While, there are always some ladder shaped or unparallel carvings on natural diamond crystals, sometimes triangle holes on the octahedral crystals, sometimes a funnel-shaped concave on the cube, and sometimes deep dark lines on the dodecahedron.
