From Death to Diamond

Diamond is always a favorite of women, while synthetic diamond has been applied widely in industries. As technology develops, synthetic diamond for adorn article gradually walks into the jewelry market. Recently, Dutch scientists have developed a new type of diamond with high temperature and high pressure method, which will greatly surprises diamond lovers.

Gerard Rokx, the leader of the project, said that it took them three years time to pass the patent application. The most astonishing thing about this study is that this new type of diamond obtains its raw material from a bunch of hair or ashes. Firstly, the staff will extract carbon from the cremated ashes, and place it in a hypoxia environment of high temperature and high pressure, the process of which has been called the carbonation.

Then, the researchers put ashes into a vacuum induction furnace of 3000℃ for purification, later into a specially designed artificial diamond pressure machine for high temperature and high pressure processing, and finally develops the life diamond.

Russell Shor, a senior industry analyst in Gemological Institute of America, said: "several technical analyses have proved that the new type diamond shares exactly the same chemical composition and optical properties with the natural one, but the only difference of  generation method"

According to introducing, the experimental group spent 24 weeks on producing such a life diamond. Compared with other synthetic diamonds, it is too difficult to distinguish for its high similarity with each other. This new type diamond has several colors like blue, red, green and yellow, and the shape is also varied. At present, the life diamond has been sold more than 400, enjoying a good prospect in Dutch domestic market; and later the project will be promoted worldwide especially in the crematory and funeral home. 

“Actually, the new type diamond gets its name from an understanding towards life of another form”, Rokx explains, “diamond is not only a decoration but a significant carrier of life.
