According to statistics of China's customs, Guangdong Province has imported 623,000 tons of aluminum oxide in the first eight months of 2014. The import volume has seen an increase of 26.4% year on year. The import value was ¥1,410,000,000, which increased 22.6%. The average price of import was ¥2,265 per ton, which declined 3.2%. In August, the import volume was 97,000 tons, which increased by 1.6 times. The value was ¥220,000,000, which increased 1.4 times. The average import price was ¥2,231 per ton, which declined 8.2%.

1. The Main Features of Guangdong Aluminum Oxide Import in August

Most of the trade method is general import. In August, Guangdong imported 970,000,000 tons of aluminum oxide, which increased 1.6 times and took up 99.7% of the total volume. At the same time, Guangdong imported 264 tons by special supervision method. Over 70% of the aluminum oxide was imported from Australia, and the import volume from Japan declined. In August, Guangdong imported 710,000,000 tons of aluminum oxide from Australia, which increased 91.9%, accounting for 73.2% of the total imports. The import from the EU and Japan were respectively 558 tons and 152 tons. State-owned enterprises have been the largest importers. In August, state-owned enterprises in Guangdong imported 37,000 tons of aluminum oxide; private companies imported 27,000 tons, which decreased 27.8%; exclusively foreign-owned companies imported 315 tons, which decreased 30%.

2. Problems & Suggestions

The gap of global supply and demand has driven the price of aluminum, so overcapacity caused by price incentive should be prevented. In the first half of 2014, major aluminum processing companies have reduced production, resulting in the first virgin aluminum gap, which was 393,000 tons, since 2006. The expanding gap has increased the motives for electrolytic aluminum price appreciation. At the end of August, LME's electrolytic aluminum's price was $2,097 per ton, which increased 15.4% year on year. During the same period, the electrolytic aluminum price in Shanghai futures market was ¥14,500, which increased 1.4% year on year. With the increase in global electrolytic aluminum price, domestic production has been stimulated, so overcapacity is likely to become more serious.

India has raised the export tariff of bauxite, which has increased domestic production cost and the risk of raw materials supply. India has become the second bauxite supplier (next to Australia) of China.
