Andrew Cuomo, governor of New York, announced yesterday that General Electric Company (GE) is to lead over 100 private enterprises in New York to form the New York Power Electronics Manufacturing Consortium (NY-PEMC), in order to develop the neat generation of Sic materials and techniques. It is reported that the total investment value of the consortium will hit $500,000,000 in the nest five years.

The joint venture is in the charge of State University of New York (SUNY), College Of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE), and State University of New York Institute of Technology (SUNYIT). GE is in charge of technology development in Nanotechnology Research Center, in the purpose of manufacturing 6-cun Sic wafer.

All participators of NY-PEMC can share advanced 6-cun Sic tools and advanced processing techniques, based on which improvement can be made in preparation for producing cost-effective Sic equipment in bulk. Neighboring college researchers in New York also played a part in the project. The consortium intends to create a high-tech cluster in New York.

Cuomo says, "The cooperation will bring thousands of posts in northern New York. Based on commitment of our partner, we're boosting New York's competitiveness in global market and make it home to high and new-tech research. The cooperation and investment will push the development of talents, create job opportunities, and increase permanent investment of New York."

The cooperation received support from "START-UP NY" tax amnesty grant. New York provides $135,000,000 for NY-PEMC equipment construction. Meanwhile, $365,000,000 private funds, relevant personnel, facilities and processing techniques, and professional materials knowledge are acquired.
