The owners of a diamond mine in northern Canada say that it contains significantly more stones than they had previously projected four years ago, Mining.com reports. The Gahcho Kue diamond project in the Northwest Territories actually has indicated resources of 33.8 million tons and additional inferred resources of 11.3 million tons. Those figures, provided by the project's junior partner, diamond company Mountain Province, amount to a 12% increase for Gahcho Kue's indicated resources and a 80% increase for the mine's inferred resources.

Previous estimates had pegged the Gahcho Kue mine as containing about 50.5 million carats of rough diamonds. Taking these new numbers into account, the mine is now expected to produce approximately 56.5 million carats of rough stones. The gems removed from Gahcho Kue are thought to be of especially high-grade, and the mine is said to be one of the world's largest sources of top-quality stones, according to Mining.com.
