China-The World's Largest Producer of Synthetic Corundum

Abrasives and abrasives products are known as "Industrial teeth”, which not only are closely related with equipment manufacturing, aerospace, shipbuilding, new energy, automotive, home appliances, electronic and information industries, but also have penetrated into every aspect of people's life. Synthetic corundum is one of abrasives, and China, India and Russia have become the largest market in artificial corundum product sales growth. China will surpass the United States as the world's largest producer of synthetic corundum.

At present, we have become a consumption super-country of synthetic corundum, but not power. International synthetic corundum products are also concentrated in the low-end market, and these products have low technology content, and there are large gaps compared with the international advanced products. The international high-end technology products are less, mainly relying on exports. There are big difference between high-end products and foreign products, and our products can only meet 30% export of a few pillar industries demands, such as automotive, aerospace, machine tools, bearings, rolling stock and ships.

Corundum has great hardness and toughness, which can be processed into different size range and particle shape, and has high temperature stability and chemical stability. Mohs hardness of brown corundum is 9, and the microhardness is 1800-2200 kg/mm2; Mohs hardness of white corundum is also 9, but the microhardness is 2200-2400kg/mm2, which is second only to diamond. Brown corundum and white corundum are main materials to produce bonded abrasives and high-grade refractory materials and products, which can also be used to prevent slippery, grinding, investment casting, advanced ceramics, etc. 

Synthetic corundum industries are mainly small and medium-sized enterprises in our country, especially in the majority with small enterprises. The number of synthetic corundum small enterprises in our country is a lot, but the sales revenue is less; Medium-sized enterprises are fewer, but there are more sales revenue. What’s more, relative to the medium-sized enterprises, some small enterprises have weak strength and technology innovation ability, backward production equipments, poor product quality, so they are at a disadvantage in the competition.

From the regional point of view, most synthetic corundum production enterprises in China are mainly concentrated in east China and south China, especially the east China occupies the majority. And from the point of specific provinces, most synthetic corundum production enterprises are located in Guizhou, Henan and Shandong. From the sales territory, it is mainly concentrated in east China, south China, and north China, and these areas are synthetic corundum downstream industries.
