Abrasive belts consist of abrasive grain adhered onto the surface of a cloth, film, paper non-woven or other backing formed into a closed loop with an adhesive joint.

Several different types of joints are used depending on the application such as butt, lap, skived, and interlocking joints. Abrasive belts are mounted on rotating wheels or pulleys and are used for surface finishing, sanding, grinding, etc. Abrasive machinery used ranges from small handheld equipment (portable belt sanders or file grinders) to very large wide belt sanding machines that use belts five feet wide.
