The Selection of Adhesives on Polishing and Grinding Materials

For grinding and polishing materials, the adhesive plays an essential part in connecting substrate and abrasives, whose varieties and dosage that need to be used are determined by the machining process. Using adhesives can make the toughness, wear resistance and sharpness of grinding and polishing materials show excellent performance. 

At the same time, the adhesives of grinding and polishing materials still have a slight difference. The adhesive of grinding materials is epoxy resin or thermoplastic phenolic resin, while polishing materials' is thermoplastic phenolic resin or natural shellac resin that needs to add the appropriate solvent, which can obtain the best result.

It is difficult to accurately distinguish from polishing and grinding materials in specific applications. As a result, the epoxy resin is mainly used for grinding materials but needs to be the liquid epoxy resin with low viscosity and good fluidity. And it is better to use the curing agent with low heat of reaction, long cycle and low toxicity. 

From the perspective of the process performance of grinding and polishing materials, the content of resin is still high and its change of temperature is also large. But beyond that, high elasticity, poor self-sharpening performance, and not great effect on machining and polishing materials, all make the kind of resin only used as adhesives of grinding materials.

The thermoplastic phenolic resin as adhesives mainly used in polishing materials, whose chemical method is to use anhydrous ethanol as solvent to make resin solution, and then add the paraformaldehyde or hexamethylene tetramine; after getting them fixed, the polycondensation can be continued, and finally it forms the structure of the polymer. 

Generally the hexamethylene tetramine curing thermoplastic resin is used for polishing materials, because the resin is easy to be cold pressing molding and not easy to go wrong in the process of polishing materials to polishing workpiece, which can improve the overall efficiency of polishing.
