Toyota, Japan recently announced its cooperation with Denso to develop a new silicon carbide power semiconductor technology, which can be applied in auto PCUs (Power Control Units). Toyota plans to have a road test with the new technology in Japan for a year.

The research of silicon carbide power semiconductor aimed at increasing the fuel oil efficiency of hybrid auto by 10%. At the same time, the research attempts to reduce the current size of silicon power semiconductors by an amazing 80%. The research has got support from The Japanese Ministry of Land and Resources as well as The Ministry of Transportation and Tourism project "JC08" in Japan.

During switching transitions, silicon carbide power semiconductor tends to consume less power loss and is capable to provide ample electric current. Although the condenser takes up nearly 40% of room, with the application of silicon carbide power semiconductor, the size of PCUs will become small significantly.
