Selection of Cubic Boron Nitride Grinding Wheel

There is only a very thin layer of cubic boron nitride (CBN) particles sticking on the surface of cubic boron nitride grinding wheel, but its toughness, hardness, durability is about 100 times more than corundum grinding wheel, and it is extremely suitable for processing hard-to-grind steel materials with high hardness, big viscosity, high temperature, high strength and low thermal conductivity, and high speed and ultra-high speed grinding. Its application plays the role of a complement with and synthetic diamond.

When diamond grinding wheel is used for grinding hard alloy and non-metallic materials, it has a unique effect, but when grinding steel material, especially special steel, the effect is not significant. The efficiency of cubic boron nitride grinding wheel grinding steel is nearly one hundred times higher than corundum grinding wheel, and five times more than diamond grinding wheel. But when grinding brittle material, it is not as good as diamond. The selections of cubic boron nitride grinding wheel and diamond grinding wheel are similar. But on the selection of bond, the first choice is resin bond, and then electroplating or metal bond.

Ceramic bond CBN grinding wheel is mainly used for titanium alloy, high speed steel, malleable cast iron and other hard-grind black metal; Resin bond CBN grinding wheel is suitable for the grinding of ferromagnetic materials, and is the ideal choice of the steel processing. The concentration of CBN grinding wheel is usually chose between 100% ~ 150%, which is more economic and reasonable. What’s more, it can't use common cutting fluid and needs special cutting fluid.

At present, our country has been able to produce RVD, CBN and metallized high quality abrasive products, such as "metal matrix ceramic CBN grinding wheel", "65 m/s ceramic bond CBN grinding wheel" and so on. The varieties and specifications of these CBN grinding wheels have formed series, whose biggest diameter can reach φ750mm and the highest using linear velocity can reach 80 m/s. Now researchers are developing 125 m/s high speed grinding wheel, and create the conditions for the promotion of superhard abrasive grinding wheel. Predictably, the widespread use of CBN grinding wheel will certainly promote the reform and development of the grinding machine manufacturing industry, and the development of high performance grinding machine will also further promote the use of superhard abrasive grinding wheel.
