Reasonable Selection of Diamond Products in Optical Glass Processing

In the process of optical glass processing, the reasonable selection of diamond products mainly depends on the following aspects: the shape of the processed optical glass components, brand, processing quality and processing technology.

People should carefully select the size and the shape of diamond tools, the type of bonding agent, particle size and concentration of diamond, the hardness of diamond, etc. The general principles are:

A. To select the shape, size and precision of diamond tools according to the processing method and the precision of machine tools.

B. To select the particle size of diamond tools according to the remain of the machined workpieces and the roughness of the surface.

C. To select the concentration of diamond tools according to the size of the machined workpieces, machining process and mantle ratio of diamond tools, especially for fine grinding and ultra-fine grinding processing.

D. To select the type of bonding agent according to the machining process and workpieces’ brand, especially for fine grinding and ultra-fine grinding. Usually, bronze, nickel, cobalt and iron base are used for fine grinding, and resin binder can be used for ultra-fine grinding. The fine grinding of soft glass can use bronze and nickel base. And iron and cobalt base can be used for hard glass and viscous glass.

E. To select the hardness and bond strength of diamond tools according to the brand of processing optical components, the hardness and the brittleness. In general, soft glass and brittle glass need lower hardness of bonding agent, while hard and brittle glass need high hardness and high strength of bonding agent.
