Japan’s polished diamond imports were flat year on year at $67.8 million in December 2012, Momozawa reported citing the Finance Ministry. By volume, the imports fell 32 percent to 132,004 carats, while the average price of the goods rose 8 percent to $514 per carat.
Polished diamond imports from India decreased 10 percent year on year to $29.2 million, while imports from Israel fell 58.9 percent to $4.2 million. However, polished imports from Hong Kong more than tripled to $8.3 million during the month, as did imports from the United States, which reached $6.3 million and imports from Belgium jumped 13.2 percent to $13.4 million,
During 2012, Japans polished imports rose 8 percent to $902 million, while the volume of imports increased 7 percent to 2,033,971 carats.
