Several hundred diamond and jewelry tradespeople squeezed into a New York City meeting of the Diamond & Importers Association of America last week to hear executives of the De Beers Group provide expert analysis of the global diamond industry. De Beers' new chief executive officer Philipper Mellier, and two of the firm's executive vice-presidents, Varda Shine and Stephen Lussier were the event headliners that drew in a standing-room-only audience to the DMIA general membership meeting.

The three executives conveyed to the crowd the nature of De Beers plans for the future and how they related to its predictions for the planetary supply and demand of rough diamonds. Lip service was paid to the industry's obligation to insist upon a diamond pipeline that contained no conflict diamonds. Mellier, Shina and Lussier also touched upon the diamond company's plans to soon launch new technologies that would make it easier to separate synthetic diamonds from natural stones.
