The polishing of polishing materials needs polishing powder, because it has an important role in grinding workpieces. Therefore, the requirements for polishing powder include high intensity and hardness, uniform particle size, external polygon and it is not easy to be broken. In this way can we guarantee the quality of the sample polishing.

Polishing powder is used as polishing slurry, spray polishes, polishing paste, and polishing material additives in metallographic sample preparation. In the original GB2477-1983 abrasive particle size and composition standards, the micro powder is marked as W, commonly known as micro mark, and W is Chinese word. There are nine grades specified in the GB-2477-1983, namely from W63 to W5. There are still five grades below W5, namely W3.5, W2.5, W1.5, W1.0, W0.5. The abrove standard has been replaced by the new standard GB/T2481-1998. New standard defines the coarse abrasive grain from F4 to F220, and there are a total of 26#, and the basic grain diameter sizes range is from 4.75mm to 63 microns.

Diamond: sharp particles, great sharpness and grinding effect, long service life, less deformation layer; suitable for coarse and fine polishing of all kinds of materials.

Silicon carbide (corundum) : green; coarser particles; used for grinding and polishing

Alumina (corundum) : white and transparent; polygonal in shape; coarse polishing and fine polishing

Chrome oxide: green; high hardness; worse than alumina in polishing; suitable for alloy steel after quenching, high speed steel, and titanium alloy polishing

Magnesium oxide: white; particle size is very fine and uniform; sharp and octahedral in shape ; suitable for the polishing of aluminum, magnesium and its alloys and nonmetallic inclusion in steel
