Refractory materials must be chemically and physically stable at high temperatures. Depending on the operating environment, they need to be resistant to thermal shock, be chemically inert, and/or have specific ranges of thermal conductivity and of the coefficient of thermal expansion. The oxides of alumina, silicon (silica) and magnesium (magnesia) are the most important materials used in the manufacturing of refractories. Another oxide usually found in refractories is the oxide of calcium (lime). Fire clays are also widely used in the manufacture of refractories.

Aiming to connect refractory manufacturers with their customers and suppliers, promote refractory production and application technology advancement, and strengthen international cooperation, the 3rd China International Refractory Production and Application Conference, has brought together leaders and experts from the world refractory and refractory using industries to share insights on the new developments of the world refractory industry, changes on the marketplace and strategies to get through this difficult time.

Liu Baikuan, president of China Refractory Materials Industry Association, points out that China's refractory materials industry is faced with the consequence of capacity expansion. Overcapacity problems, rising financial costs, and declining profits are three serious problems. During the same period, low industrial concentration and outdated production technology of small companies have formed huge pressure on the environment and resources. Industry transformation and upgrading becomes extremely urgent.

Wang Liqun, vice president of China Iron and Steel Association, reveals that China is the world's largest refractory materials producer, consumer and exporter with its refractory consumption accounting for more than 65% of the world's total. Under current situation, polarization in iron and steel companies will accelerate. During the process, inferior companies will be eliminated, while superior companies will become stronger and larger. Similar to iron and steel companies, refractory materials companies require repositioning within the industry and industry chains.

Xu Dianli, standing vice president of China Refractory Materials Industry Association, suggests that China remains the dominating market of refractory materials. Therefore, refractory materials companies are supposed to enhance cooperation with downstream companies, improve products' quality by technical cooperation based on mutual benefits.
