Cloth belts are either supported by a contact wheel (rough grinding) or a plate (face dressing), or unsupported (polishing).

Cotton cloth belts are used in dry sanding operations, with a flexible backing for polishing, a strong and rigid backing under server conditions or when massive metal removal is required.

Polyester cloth belts are more resistant to wear and to high tensions than cotton cloth belts. They can be used in both dry and wet sanding applications and are suitable for high operating speeds, when there is a risk of belts breakage.

Water spray eliminates heat produced when sanding or polishing and increases surfaces finish.
