Introduction:
Before being launched on the market, each batch of superabrasive has to be carefully submitted to a number of tests in the laboratory which should be certified ISO 9002.
The following physical properties are carefully tested and analyzed:
size distribution average
size standard deviation
shape factor
shape standard deviation
eccentricity (computed optical analysis)
strength (Toughness Index - TI)
microshipping resistance
wear resistance
strength after heat treatment (Thermal Toughness Index - TTI)
microchipping resistance after heat treatment
thermal stability (based on the weight loss and the TTI/TI ratio)
For each batch, all test results of the above characteristics have to be computed and, through mathematical models, a Performance Index can be defined pointing the best use of the specific superabrasive.
Application:
PolyCrystalline Diamond (PCD) consisting of grain sizes from several nanometers to several micrometers can also be grown. Some polycrystalline diamond grains are surrounded by thin, non-diamond carbon, while others are not. These different factors affect the diamond's hardness, smoothness, conductivity, optical properties and more.
